What is a carat anyway?

1 Carat is equal to 0.2 grams.
Carat is the measurement of a diamond’s weight and not its size. Of course the heavier a diamond the bigger it is.

How big will it be?

The size of your diamond will be determined by its weight in carats and its shape (i.e. round, princess or heart etc.). Although each individual diamond will vary very slightly in size we’ve provided a guide above to how big you can expect your diamond to be.

Size matters!

In the world of a diamond size matters and that’s reflected in its price. Heavier larger diamonds are rarer than their smaller cousins so prices increase exponentially with weight and size.

Diamond Colour

The colour of a diamond can range from light yellow to exceptional white. Mad About Diamonds only supply white diamonds because yellow diamonds are almost as unpopular as yellow snow.

Good Cut

A diamond with a good cut will look very bright and sparkly. Any minor imperfections in the symmetry, polish or proportions of the diamond will not noticeably affect the brilliance of the diamond. Choose good cut if carat size and clarity take preference.

Very Good Cut

A diamond with a very good cut will look very bright and sparkly. This cut represents a high quality diamond and is often the best balance between cost and performance.

Excellent Cut

A diamond with an excellent or ideal cut has been crafted to produce maximum sparkle. Not every diamond can be cut in such a way and therefore this grade will always fetch a premium.

Diamond Cut Explained

The cut of a diamond refers not to its shape as in round or princess but to the actual proportions and facets of the stone and depending on how well the stone has been cut determines its brilliance. Put simply, the better a diamond is cut, the more sparkle it will have.

At Mad About Diamonds we believe that the cut of a diamond is so important to its sparkle and appearance that we will only supply diamonds with a cut grade of Good or above. Most top diamond labs tend to use five cut standards for round stones, poor, fair, good, very good and excellent. With round cut stones we offer only the top three grades.

"Good" means your diamond will have cut proportions of Good or better.

"Very Good" means your diamond will have cut proportions of Very Good or Excellent.

"Excellent" means your diamond will have cut proportions of Excellent.

The above cut grading system only applies to round cut diamonds. For fancy cut diamonds (that is shapes other than round) the grading of cut is more directly related to the symmetry and polish of the diamond. With fancy shaped stones we offer two cut grades.

"Good" means your diamond will have symmetry and polish of Good or better.

"Very Good" means your diamond will have symmetry and polish of Very Good or Excellent.

Understanding the 4C's of diamond grading can be a complex business. We have tried to simplify the process but you can be assured that Mad About Diamonds supply only high grade diamonds and above so you can be sure you will receive a stunning piece of jewellery.

If you have any questions or require any advice please call or email us. If you wish to study the 4C's in more detail we recommend you take a look at the GIA website which can be reached from a link on the "Diamond Certificates" page on our site.

Clarity

Diamonds are forged underground in hot pressurised environments. Like us, when hot and under pressure, they make mistakes in the form of internal and external inclusions, flaws and spots. You can’t see them with the naked eye, but under a microscope science bods rate your diamond’s clarity and the better its clarity the better its sparkle.

Is that clear?
