Diamond engagement rings are given to ladies by their loved ones as the ultimate expression of commitment; men usually spend a lot of time and of course money finding the perfect ring to suit their lady. Diamond jewellery has been at the height of conversation recently as a collection of Mrs Lily Safra’s fabulous jewellery is scheduled for auction in Geneva on May 14th. Christie’s auction house has been entrusted with holding the event, all of the proceeds generated by the event will be donated to 20 different charitable institutions that are located all around the world, including The Elton John AIDS Foundation, Henry Street Settlement New York and Le Ballet de l'Opera National de Paris. The auction has been named ‘Jewels of Hope’ as it will bring funds to charities that are in great need of resources.
Regarded as a major philanthropist of our time, Mrs Safra is also an avid collector of beautiful jewellery. This collection reflects her sophisticated taste and its evolution throughout five decades, from the 1970s to the present day. Featuring 70 pieces, the collection of Mrs Lily Safra is estimated to raise in excess of $20 million (£12.5 million) and includes diamonds, rubies and sapphires, in a selection of diamond engagement rings, bracelets, and necklaces. One of the most talked about pieces is a ruby and diamond Camellia flower brooch by JAR designed for Lily in 2003, which is estimated to bring between $1.2million (£756,000) to $1.5 million (£944,850).
