The modern round cut was developed in the early twentieth century and was thought to be the best shape to reflect light and create diamond “fire” according to maths. Various diamond regulatory bodies have different opinions on the perfect dimensions of the round cut but the vast majority of diamonds are round cut because they achieve the most sparkle.
Princess cut diamonds are the second most common cut of diamonds and are the popular alternative to round cut diamonds. The princess cut achieves a reasonable amount of diamond fire and the square cut visually accentuates the size of the diamond. In case you were wondering, the emerald cut was originally designed for emeralds but looks equally beautiful on a diamond. The long table facet of the emerald cut is great at showing off the flawless clarity of a good diamond. The emerald cut is a timeless classic, which accentuates the size of the diamond and looks very elegant.
The marquise cut is an unusual cut that is not particularly well known. The Marquise cut is designed specifically to make the diamond appear a little larger than it really is. The proportion of the cut is also designed specifically to run parallel to the finger making an ideal cut for a stylish solitaire diamond engagement ring.
Oval cut diamonds offer an interesting alternative to the more traditional round cut. It is the most brilliant of all fancy shaped diamonds because it's shape is nearest to the round.
Also referred to as the tear-drop shaped diamond. When set in a ring the point of the diamond is typically worn facing outward to lengthen the appearance of the finger. Also a great choice for pendants.
Trillion cut diamonds
The trillion cut is a triangular shape that is often used for smaller diamonds that accompany a larger diamond. This is due to the convenience of the triangular shape which can easily be set with other shapes. Trillions have a large surface area and often appear much larger than they weigh.
