Diamond Engagement Rings: Pretty in Pink!

22/02/2012

Diamond engagement rings are available in a huge range of shapes and sizes, there are so many choices when it comes to deciding on the perfect engagement ring it’s no wonder most men find it a difficult decision to make. This week pink diamonds have been attracting a lot of attention as the Rio Tinto Argyle mine discovered it’s largest one to date, only 1 of the 66 largest diamonds in the world is pink, this highlights how rare the precious diamonds are and how exciting the find is.

The largest pink diamond ever found by mining company Rio Tinto is about to be cut and polished in a meticulous 10 day process. The 12.76 carat gem is to be known as the Argyle Pink Jubilee Diamond was found at Rio Tinto's Argyle mine in the east Kimberley region of Western Australia, this area produces a huge 90 percent of the world's supply of pink diamonds. The diamond is being cut and polished as a single stone by Richard How Kim Kam, who has worked for the company for 25 years. Maybe it will be incorporated in to a diamond engagement ring like the one Jennifer Lopez received from Ben Affleck which was a pink solitaire diamond engagement ring.

It is unknown how much the diamond is expected to fetch, but experts say pink diamonds attract on average 20 times the price of an equivalent white diamond, The price is determined by the intensity of the colour. Once the diamond is cut and polished it will be graded by a team of international experts and shown around the world, then it will no doubt be auctioned later this year. It is believed that the Argyle mine is set to close in 2016, which means the number of pink diamonds available will reduce dramatically.

For a huge selection of diamond engagement rings visit us at Mad About Diamonds, we have a wide selection that will dazzle any shopper, ranging from the very simple princess cut diamond engagement rings to the more elaborate shoulder set or multi stone diamond engagement rings for you to choose from.

Diamond Engagement Rings: Choosing your precious metal

22/02/2012

As you will understand from previous blogs there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration when choosing your perfect diamond engagement rings, one of the major decisions that can have a huge impact on the final look of the ring is what precious metal you decide to have the ring crafted from. White gold, yellow gold, platinum, and palladium are the most common precious metal choices for diamond engagement rings. Of course, each precious metal has its advantages and disadvantages, so it helps to take the time to familiarise yourself with each option before making your final selection.

Of all the precious metals used for diamond engagement rings, gold is the most common, as well as the most traditional. Available in yellow, rose and white variants, gold is durable and long lasting. Both white gold and yellow gold is considered affordable, particularly when compared to other precious metals, such as platinum. Gold tends to hold up fairly well with daily use, but can scratch or dent in some cases. While yellow gold will maintain its golden colour over time, the finish on white gold is achieved by coating a yellow gold with a white metal alloy, such as rhodium. This means that, over time, the white tone of the white gold will slowly fade and may need periodic re-coatings to keep the white gold looking its best.

Platinum and palladium come from the same metal family and are a good option if durability is an issue as they are harder precious metals than gold. They are both hypo-allergenic to, meaning they are ideal for individuals with skin allergies or sensitive skin as they are proven to not cause any reaction or irritation. Palladium engagement rings do however have a slightly heavier weight than platinum diamond engagement rings, making them ideal for consumers who prefer a more substantial feel to their engagement rings.

Visit us at Mad About Diamonds for a wide range of diamond engagement rings including marquise cut diamond engagement rings and solitaire diamond engagement rings.

Diamond engagement rings and wedding rings are bought every year in their millions all around the world, however, this is not replicated in the number of jewellery insurance policies taken out by individuals, with gold and diamond prices rising over the last decade your precious jewellery may be worth more than you think. Recent research has found that a huge 68% of those with diamond engagement rings and wedding rings have never had them valued, so they may have their rings insured but it makes it difficult if your ring is lost or stolen to claim for the true value of the ring.

Diamond Engagement rings: Valentine’s Celebrations Around the World

9/02/2012

Diamond engagement rings are purchased in there thousands on the run up to Valentine’s Day with individuals all around the world choosing the most romantic day of the year to pop the big question, we have already learnt in an earlier blog how we here in Britain traditionally celebrate Valentine’s Day, but how is it celebrated around the world?

Many other European countries such as France and Spain also celebrate Valentine’s Day in the same as we do in the UK with flowers, chocolates, romantic meals and sometimes even diamond engagement rings. However in Wales many people celebrate Dydd Santes Dwynwen, the patron Saint of Welsh Lovers, which is celebrated on the 25th January instead of 14th February. In Latvia and Lithuania they have a very unique tradition; it is common for people to place stickers of their loved ones faces on to their own face and clothing. In Slovenia the meaning of Valentine’s Day is totally different which is interesting, 14th February marks the day when the work first starts in the fields and vineyards, it is celebrated by Slovenians by planting seeds. Part of the reason for this is that in Slovenia Saint Valentine is considered the First Saint of Spring.

In Brazil Valentine’s Day is celebrated on 12th June the day before Saint Anthony’s Day who is the Brazilian Saint of marriage, and on this day single females perform spiritual rituals in the belief that it will help them find good husbands, who will maybe propose to them with diamond engagement rings if they are lucky. On the other side of the globe, Japanese women give chocolates to men to celebrate Valentine’s Day, other gifts are very uncommon, Following this on 14th March, also known as White Day men then give chocolates to a women as a reply. This tradition is also followed in South Korea, however if you did not receive anything on 14th February or 14th March you should eat black noodles on 14th April to mourn your single life, this is also known as Black Day.

Whether you are thinking about popping the big question on Valentine’s Day or any other day of the year visit us at Mad About Diamonds to view our full range of diamond engagement rings including the very popular solitaire diamond engagement rings and marquise engagement rings.

Solitaire diamond engagement rings: The 4 C’s.

1/02/2012

Solitaire diamond engagement rings are a classic choice when you are going to pop the big question to your loved one, but how do you choose the perfect diamond for your perfect lady? The diamond industry relate to the quality of diamonds with the 4 C’s Carat, Clarity, Colour and Cut. Every single diamond can be described by these elements which are used to determine the diamonds overall value and indeed quality.

Carat – Diamonds are weighed in metric carats. A metric carat is a unit of mass which is equal to 200mg.

Clarity – Created by nature under tremendous heat and pressure, nearly all diamonds contain unique internal characteristics called inclusions and external characteristics called blemishes. Many clarity characteristics are too tiny to be seen by anyone other than a trained gemmologist. Diamonds with the few inclusions or blemishes are considered to be more desirable and therefore more expensive. Clarity is very important when choosing solitaire diamond engagement rings.

Colour – Truly colourless diamonds are very rare and highly valued. Gemmological Institute of America (GIA), uses letters to represent colours of diamonds, beginning with D which is colourless and ending at Z which is light yellow or brown. Diamonds in other colours such as blue, pink, black, green and orange are extremely rare but do occur.

Cut – While diamonds can be sculpted into different shapes, the term "cut" actually refers to a diamond's complex relationship with light. A number of factors influence a diamond's cut grade, including its overall face-up appearance, design and craftsmanship. There are many different cuts of diamond including princess, pear, round, emerald, marquise and oval just to name a few.

If you are looking for diamond engagement rings visit us at Mad About Diamonds with have a huge variety of solitaire diamond engagement rings as well as marquise cut diamond engagement rings for you to choose from.

Diamond engagement rings this Valentine’s Day

23/01/2012

Diamond engagement rings are a very popular gift on Valentine’s Day as are other items such as flowers, chocolates, and jewellery. Valentine’s Day is held to celebrate the love and affection between two people that are in a relationship. Many romantic couples will dine in nice restaurants or have a cosy night in on February 14th, but what is the history behind this day of love?

Presently, the Catholic Church recognises at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. The precise origins of Valentine’s Day are still very unclear, one legend claims St Valentine was a Roman priest, famed for marrying couples in secret against the rules of the emperor Claudius II, who believed that all young men would make better soldiers if they stayed single without the distraction a wife may bring. Another story portrays St Valentine as a prisoner in the 15th century who fell in love with his jailor’s daughter and sent her the very first Valentine’s card on the day before his execution he signed the letter "From your Valentine", an expression that is still in use today.

Diamond engagement rings have not always been a popular gift around Valentine’s Day. Here in the UK, Valentine's Day began to become popular around the seventeenth century. Towards the end of the eighteenth century, it was common for friends and lovers to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century with improvements in technology and the invention of the printing press, printed cards began to replace written letters. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one's feelings was discouraged.

If you are thinking about popping the big question on one of the most romantic days of the year we have a huge range of diamond engagement rings at Mad About Diamonds. Whether its round cut diamond engagement rings which are very popular or even solitaire diamond engagement rings we have a huge selection for you to choose from.

Solitaire diamond engagement rings for Holly Valance

23/01/2012

Solitaire diamond engagement rings were a hot topic last week at the Radio Times party at The Claridge’s Hotel, London as 28-year-old Australian actress Holly Valance was spotted wearing a ring on her wedding finger. It is believed that Holly’s fiancé business tycoon Nick Candy asked Holly to marry him in the Maldives four weeks ago whilst the couple were enjoying a relaxing holiday at the £3,000 a night Reethi Rah resort in the Maldives a few days before Christmas. She Tweeted the news of her engagement via a picture of her showing him getting down on one knee on the beach, with 'Will You Marry Me?' written out in fire. She accompanied her tweet with the words 'And I said YES!!! Happiest day of my life'.

The couple met in 2009 at a mutual friend’s dinner party and Holly has spoken openly of her love for Nick. Her fiancé’s 39th Birthday party was the first time Holly had been seen wearing the huge solitaire diamond engagement ring in public, this may be due to having the ring re-sized. The ring itself holds a gigantic solitaire diamond on a platinum band, the diamond is princess cut and is approximately 5 carats.

At Mad About Diamonds we have a huge selection of diamond engagement rings including solitaire diamond engagement rings and princess cut diamond engagement rings for you to choose from. Diamond engagement rings: The Midas Touch!

13/01/2012

Choosing diamond engagement rings is a difficult task for most men, the majority of men will opt to ask a friend or family member of their loved one to help them decide which ring would be best when popping the big question. This was not the case in Scotland this week as John Greenwood set himself an extra challenge, John spend months panning for gold in local rivers in the Highlands, over only 3 months he found a total of 34 grams, this had completely astonished experts in the gold panning area, experts believe that most gold panning enthusiasts can spend 30 years panning and get just a fraction of this. To collect this gold John simply used a gold pan, shovel, trowel and rake and spent hours in the chilly water between September and December, he believes he must have had beginners luck to get so much gold in such a short period of time.

Diamond engagement rings come in all shapes and sizes, from solitaire diamond engagement rings to multi stone diamond engagement rings which is what John opted for, John used 4 grams of the gold that he panned to create his girlfriends, 3 diamond Celtic band style ring which carries its own unique character. With 30 grams left over John has decided he will have the remaining gold made into the couple’s wedding bands for their big day.

At Mad About Diamonds we have a wide range of diamond engagement rings to suit all, from the very elaborate to the very simple. Visit our website to find your perfect ring, if you have any queries or questions please call us on 0151 625 8800.

Diamond engagement rings: A work of art!

13/01/2012

Diamond engagement rings are the perfect way to show your loved one how much they mean to you and that you want to spend the rest of your life with them. Drew Barrymore was looking radiant this week as she showed off her new sparkler from her boyfriend of just under a year Will Kopelman, an art consultant, who proposed during a winter break in Sun Valley, Idaho. Diamond engagement rings are never easy to choose, Drews ring certainly has an artist edge, it is a 4 carat colourless radiant princess cut diamond engagement ring with accent diamond stones set into the band which complement the stone immensely.

Surprisingly this is Drew’s fifth engagement, so diamond engagement rings are not a new thing for her. Drew has not had much luck in the marriage department in the past, she has been married twice before to bar owner Jeremy Thomas in 1994 and more recently comedian Tom Green in 2001, both of these marriages lasted less than five months, it seems Drew is doing a Brittany and going for third time lucky with Will.

At Mad About Diamonds with have a huge selection of diamond engagement rings for you to choose from if you are thinking of popping the big question. If you need help deciding on what style maybe best for your loved one browse our wide selection and you will be sure to find the one for her. Princess Cut Diamond Engagement Rings: Clarity and its importance for Diamonds

9/01/2012

The key aspect of princess cut diamond engagement rings is unarguably the diamond. The princess cut is very popular at the moment, with its simple elegance and its multifaceted appeal. These rings offer a beautiful and timeless piece, with which to declare your love for your partner. When choosing pieces such as solitaire diamond engagement rings, which feature a single gem, the clarity of the diamond should be the priority. Other priorities include the setting of the ring and the material that it is made from. Like many aspects of fashion princess cut diamond engagement rings are also subject to trends. For example, platinum is the metal of choice for many couples this season. However, gold remains a firm favourite across our ranges here at Mad About Diamonds!

Clarity in diamonds refers to how well the gem catches the light and is one of the key 4 c’s of the diamond industry. The highest quality, in terms of clarity, attainable is “Internally Flawless (IF)” which has no cracks or flaws which impede the flow of light and make the stones more valuable. With princess cut diamond engagement rings, as the cut of the ring is of the upmost importance then the flow of light within the diamond should be a huge consideration. As flaws and imperfections are caused during the creation of the diamond, they are usually present throughout the diamond and as such cannot easily be removed with shaping. If you have any questions regarding clarity or any other aspect of diamond quality, then contact us at Mad About Diamonds on 0151 625 8800 and we will happily answer your questions.

Solitaire diamond engagement rings: Fears rise in Zimbabwe

9/01/2012

Solitaire diamond engagement rings are the ultimate in chic fashion, but diamonds are a controversial subject at the moment around the world as it is believed that conflict diamonds are being used to fund Robert Mugabe’s regime against political opponents in Zimbabwe this is as the elections draw close. Experts believe the Kimberley Press are partly to blame as their campaign to control conflict diamonds has failed.

This past weekend, Anjin Investments, a Chinese-led venture in Zimbabwe in partnership with Robert Mugabe's government, declared that it was now the world's biggest diamond producer, with a huge supply of over three million carats to sell. The company, which thanked the Kimberley Process for its backing, is funding a new military college in Zimbabwe.

Reports from Zimbabwe suggest that Robert Mugabe’s secret police also known as the truly feared Central Information Organisation (CIO), is flush with cash, and has purchased hundreds of vehicles and harmful weapons from China in recent months. Salaries of officers have been increased and thousands of new officers have been recruited and trained, raising fearful concerns that they will be used to intimidate voters in next year's elections.

Diamond engagement rings: Britney Spears, third time lucky.

5/01/2012

Diamond engagement rings are not a new accessory for American singer Britney Spears as she is engaged for a third time. Britney’s former agent come boyfriend Jason Trawick allegedly popped the big question before Christmas in Los Angeles after dating Britney since 2009. The couple showed off the ring and their happiness at the news over the weekend as they celebrated Jason’s 40th birthday in Las Vegas in the Chocolate Lounge at the Sugar Factory in the Paris Hotel before carrying on the festivities at a dance party at the Chateau nightclub.

The ring itself is a dazzling 3 carat round cut diamond engagement ring, with a shoulder setting paved with accent diamonds that enhance the beautiful centre stone. The diamond engagement ring follows the current vintage fashion. Britney Spears is no stranger to Las Vegas, back in 2004 she got married there to her first husband and childhood friend, Jason Alexander, the marriage did not last long and was annulled after only 55 hours. Britney was also previously married to dancer Kevin Federline for two years, with whom she has two children.  Hopefully for Britney this is her third time lucky and they will be very happy with each other.

At Mad About Diamonds we specialise in diamond engagement rings, we have a wide range of all cuts and settings of rings, with bands crafted out of a variety of precious metals such as platinum, yellow gold, white gold. As each layer is opened, the laughs will grow, when she is down to the last box get down on one knee. If your one for making grand gestures you could get creative with the Christmas lights, maybe spelling out the words ‘Will you marry me?’ or something of that description.

At Mad About Diamonds we can give you all a helping hand in choosing your perfect diamond engagement rings to fit the personality and style of your girlfriend. We have a huge range of rings to suit all, from the very simple, plain rings to the very elaborate and decorative. Princess cut diamond engagement rings have been very popular this season if you are looking to follow the current trends.

Irish singer Una Healy is the first member of The Saturdays to receive a solitaire diamond engagement ring, she showed off her new sparkler as The Saturdays opened their tour in Wembley last night, Her bandmate Rochelle Wiseman was the first to let the news slip on stage at the O2, but Una quickly confirmed it. The 30-year-old, who is currently pregnant with her first child with the rugby ace appeared to be glowing with happiness. Diamond dress rings: The Crown Jewels of Hollywood

14/12/2011

An auction including a wide collection of diamond dress rings, necklaces, bracelets, pendants and diamond earrings all belonging to the late Elizabeth Taylor was held yesterday at Christie’s in New York, the auction broke the world record for a single owner jewellery auction. In total there was 80 pieces of jewellery in the auction, the collection had been named the ‘Crown jewels of Hollywood’, the auction was estimated to bring approximately £12.9 million, it actually brought a grand total of £74 million. The previous world record for a single owner jewellery auction was set in 1987 when the Duchess of Windsor’s collection was auctioned in Geneva.

The star of the evening was the Elizabeth Taylor Diamond, a 33.29 carat asscher-cut diamond dress ring given to her by Richard Burton in 1968. She wore it nearly every day. It was expected to fetch £1.6 million-£2.2 million but it sold for a massive £5,643,840, the ring was purchased by a private buyer from Asia. However the piece that sold for the highest price was the necklace known as the ‘La Peregrina’ which incorporates a huge 16th century 50.6 carat pearl which was owned previously by royalty including Queen Mary I given to her by husband King Philip II of Spain. Part of the proceeds from the auction will go to The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, which she established in 1991 to help people living with AIDS.

At Mad About Diamonds we have a huge range of diamond dress rings available to suit all price ranges so if you want to treat someone special this Christmas to a gift that they will cherish forever we have just what you are looking for.

Diamond Engagement Rings - Trends for 2012; Vintage (Part 1)

14/12/2011

A buzz word around diamond engagement rings for 2012 is “Vintage”. Designers are looking back to decades long since passed in order to create their gems of the future. It seems that the idea is very much, why have one diamond or one stone when you can have lots!? At the moment trends are coming from all aspects of history with the Edwardian and Victorian influences as well as blasts from the elaborate Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements.

At this point you may simply be wondering what we mean by “Vintage” and how will this influence the diamond engagement rings trend? Put simply, a vintage ring can be a piece from almost any era that is more than several decades old, a 1960’s solitaire diamond engagement rings, can now be classed as a vintage piece, however true vintage would be from the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. It is also possible for new pieces to take inspiration from vintage design and so the piece would have a vintage feel but can be made with the latest technologies and metals, this can be referred to as “new” vintage. Some of the more popular eras to take inspiration from or possess an engagement ring from are; Georgian, Edwardian, Victorian, Art Deco and Retro.

Items from the Georgian era typically include diamonds as well as coloured gemstones and the stones are smaller and multiple unlike the recent trend towards solitaire diamond engagement rings. Edwardian style tends to include more intricate detailing and lady-like style, including diamonds in fancy scroll and milgrain detail. Victorian vintage includes the use of multiple metals in a piece to create a layered look and multi-colour feel. The diamonds from this era are typically “old-min” cut, which is known today as antique cushion cut. Art Deco brings forward a geometric sleek style with defining lines, unusually complemented with black accents or colour stones. Retro vintage is the epitome of the big and bold style that encompassed the 1960s-1980s.

Diamond Engagement Rings - Trends for 2012; Coloured Stones (Part 2)

14/12/2011

In this second part of our look at diamond engagement rings trends for 2012 we explore the fabulous world of coloured stones. Sometimes, as the Duchess of Cambridge, we are certain would agree a coloured stone can be beautifully complemented by diamonds or vice versa. Here at Mad About Diamonds we are happy to explore the world of coloured stones, but we are certain that diamonds will always hold their place in a girls heart, diamonds are after all a girl’s best friend.
The second main trend for 2012 seems to be set around coloured gem stones, such as sapphires, rubies and emeralds, as we have alluded to Kate Middleton may have enhanced this trend. Coloured stones are not a new trend and as we have mentioned they have very much been a part of fashion in the past, including the Georgian movement as well as the Art deco movement. However, coloured diamonds have been sported by some of Hollywood’s betrothed celebrities, such as Mariah Carey with her pink diamonds as well as Rebecca Romijn (Mystique from the X-Men films) with her beautiful yellow diamond ring.
If you are however, a fan of a simpler yet dazzling look then please browse our collection of diamond engagement rings. We wholeheartedly believe that even on its own a diamond can offer something a little different, the marquise engagement ring for example offers a quirky shape and yet a classic stone. At Mad About Diamonds we want to offer the best possible service we can, so if you love one of our ring styles but are looking for more of a bespoke engagement rings, please contact us and we will be happy to discuss or services with you.
